To keep receiving free-to-air TV after the digital switchover In 2010-2013 you will need a television that is capable of receiving Digital signals. |
|---|
In Perth, for instance, you get a digital
TV or set top box and you stand to receive about 25 commercial digital stations.
Television broadcasters ( ABC, Nine, SBS etc) obtained a new broadcast
Frequency from the government, with the result that until the digital switchover
Is completed in the next couple of years, each broadcaster is running analogue
As well as multiple digital channels. The digital channels are operating on a
19.39 megabit a second stream of digital information, which your
Antenna picks up as long as it is digital HD ready.
Digital television provides vastly improved picture and sound quality,
Including widescreen pictures and digital audio. Digital television also
Offers the benefits of more channels and content.

What Is The Benefit of The DTV Transition?
The transition to DTV will provide a host of important benefits:
Some of the spectrum will be auctioned to companies that will be able to
Provide consumers with more advanced Wireless services.
It has allowed stations to offer improved picture and surround Sound
(Enhanced audio).
It has expanded programming choices for viewers. For example, a broadcaster
Will be able to offer multiple digital programs simultaneously (multicasting).
It will eventually provide interactive video and data services that are not possible
With analogue technology.
A digital signal can support a higher resolution, so the picture will still look good
When shown on a larger TV screen

DIGITAL SIGNALS CAN SEND MORE INFOMATION THAN ANALOG
More Channels / More Content / HD Quality
When Buying a New TV Or Set-Top Box
Here is what you should know about DTV before you buy:
Compare DTV picture quality. DTV comes in several levels of picture quality.
The most common are High Definition Television (HDTV), and Standard Definition Television (SDTV).
HDTV is Digital at its finest. With HDTV, you can enjoy a true home theatre Hi-Def experience.
SDTV is the lower quality digital picture from older set top boxes and older TV's

Make sure you have all the DTV equipment you need. DTV equipment can be
Purchased as an integrated set or as separate components. "Integrated" digital
Televisions have built-in tuners and a monitor to display the programming. If you
Buy a DTV monitor (without an integrated tuner), you will need a stand-alone
Tuner, cable set-top box, or satellite set-top box to watch DTV.
HDTV is not the same as DTV. HDTV requires special equipment, so make sure
To ask about HDTV-capable equipment to verify you have the proper set-top
Box to view HDTV. Ask what connectors you need to make sure your new DTV
Set works with your other electronic equipment (DVD player, digital video
Recorder (DVR), Camcorder, VCR, computer, video games, and other equipment).
The Electronic equipment you have now should work with your new DTV, but you
May need new connectors. Make a list of what you have now and ask your
Retailer what you need to connect the components.

Will I Need A New TV Antenna ?
In most cases, existing antennas that are in good condition and connected
Using quality coaxial cable are capable of providing adequate reception in
Good signal areas. However, in some areas of Perth the new channels
Used for digital TV services may be incompatible with old antennas currently
In use for existing analog channels.
Digital Uses Different Elements On Your Antenna To PicK Up Signals
I Would Recommend An Upgrade If:
- If Your Antenna Is Older Than 8-10 Years
- If Your Antenna Is Starting To Break, Bend or Shake
- If You Have More than 3-4 TV Points from the Antenna and week signal
- If Your Antennas Line Of Sight Is Obstructed By Trees, Buildings Etc
- You Are Experiencing Pixilation and "no signal" of Digital Channels
What is a Digital HD Antenna?
The obvious (and correct! ) answer is any antenna which receives a digital
Signal well enough to allow reliable HD viewing. The word reliable cannot be
Over stressed because the digital cliff edge can make viewing digital a very
Frustrating experience if your signal is marginal. Generally speaking a
Digital HDTV antenna installation is one where the signal reception quality
Is maximized in order to minimize the effects of the digital cliff edge.
This may require a different group or quality of antenna, upgraded cable,
A better quality amplifier/splitter, or maybe nothing at all!
Digital TV Myths
There are so many misconceptions and so much misinformation about
"Digital" that we thought we should tell the unvarnished Truth. We can
Do that because unlike the government wanting To use the RF spectrum
To make money, or the TV retailers
Wanting to sell you a new TV We have no hidden agenda.
Perhaps the biggest digital myth is that it Will
Make your TV obsolete. That is a complete fiction but you may need a set top
Box from around $40 That is all dont be fooled by TV sales People
All TVs will work with A digital box after the switch off

Digital TV Negatives
When the digital switch over occurs those with portable TVs running off set top
Antennas or coat hangers are likely to be affected the most. Many people use portables in upstairs
Rooms, boats, caravans or sheds etc.. and put up with a watchable but
Less than perfect picture. Unfortunately, unless they live in areas with a
Reasonably strong signal, they may not get much worth watching at all after
The switch off come 2013. The Digital Cliff Edge will be the cause of many a frustrated TV viewer
Caravan, boat owners Rural Dwellers and the "Grey Nomads “out there will suffer
Will Suffer Most from the digital TV switch over as not having a robust constant
Digital Signal from the Antenna installation will affect picture quality to the point of utter
Annoyance.
The Government so I hear will be offering digital TV through satellite receivers
For those in poor signal areas so all hope is not lost. Just makes things more of a pain for portability
A Digital TV Picture is NOT Superior
To a 'GOOD' Analogue Picture.
"the powers that be" are very quiet about this, it is actually worse because the
Broadcasters want as many program channels as possible and they have sacrificed picture quality
(And a robust signal) to that End. A good (I must stress that word) analogue picture can take
Advantage of its greater bandwidth to give more detail and "higher refresh rate" To the picture.
I accept that one has to look closely at the picture especially a fast moving one, but a digital picture is worse.
Look at the fine detail ( on a moving shot, a football match is a good example)
you can see it "blocking" or smudging. Even more annoying, to me anyway, one can sometimes
See the staccato movement associated with too low a refresh rate.
When you see your new TV in the shop remember you are seeing it in its best conditions
When you take it home dont expect everything to be Full HD quality and as impressive.
Black and White Films were filmed 50 years ago..
And Home and Away doesnt have the budget
They will never be in HD quality even if shown on HD channels

The graph Above shows how the relative picture qualities of the analogue
And digital systems vary as the signal quality deteriorates. Note how with
A perfect signal the analogue picture is superior, then falls behind as the
Signal quality degrades, before retaking the lead when the digital signal
Runs out of error correction data and falls down the digital cliff edge.
Incidentally (analogue) fm radio and (digital) dab radio follow the same
Kind of pattern.
The Digital Signal Is Not As Robust As The
Analogue One.
An analogue signal can be really quite poor and you will still get a watchable
Picture. It may be grainy and maybe even ghosting but its there to see.
A digital signal will not degrade in the same manner. Generally you will
Either get a perfect picture, or you will get very annoying blocking/freezing,
Digital transmissions have in-built "error correction" which can overcome
A certain amount of signal degradation. However, once that error correction
Data has been exhausted the picture has no alternative but to fail spectacularly.
This is known as the "digital cliff edge" and it is why one should go for the
Best antenna, the best cable and (if required) a decent screened amp/splitter.
Any one of these may (normally) only make a marginal difference, but
If they keep your signals on the right side of that "cliff edge", then for what
They cost, it is an excellent investment
Complicated Technology
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TV ANY MORE, they are all computers fiendishly disguised
As TVs, and like computers they are prone to all the similar problems of
Software upgrades power cycling and hours trying to understand set-up manuals written
In Greek and Latin, Mandarin and Satsuma
Every Old-Style TV or video will also need its own free view "set top box"
If it is to continue working when they turn off the analogue signals.
This presents many problems:
It is quite common to come across people who find the operation of the freeview/Digital
Box somewhat complicated, in fact a significant part of our business is at times
setting up and maintaining customers boxes especially for those the older generations.
I have seen so many old battlers and grandmas simply befuddled trying to work
2-3 remote controls together..
its just too much to expect when they are used too the dials and whistles of yesterday

Thant Cannot Figure Out the Set Top Box or Av Settings as the Pressed Something and It Seriously

Digital Tuner Quality
Digital tuners are not the most reliable pieces of modern technology and they are not really
repairable either. Not a big deal if it is A separate set-top box which has failed
(they are not that expensive) but If it is built into your TV then that’s a rather different
story...... We Can economically repair around 80% of conventional TVs (i.e. analogue,
Non lcd, non plasma, non rear projection) but with integrated sets It is rather lower than
that, we get a lot of cases after fault finding A TV system of the digital tuner inside the TV
bieng at fault. Do not Assume all TVs are the same a lot of TVs these days come straight
From a mass production line and quality is compromised on Low end models
TV Quality or Quantity
Lets be honest, most of the additional programmed channels
On freeview are either repeats or they are trash. I know that is a
Subjective opinion but i suspect most people would agree with
It. There seams to be an inverse proportional law about TV, the more programs
There are, the worse they are.
Anyone who has ever visited or lived in America
Can testify to this

Digital TV in Conclusion
Many people do not have good analogue signals because they either live in a
"Fringe" area or they have a poor quality antenna Installation. If signal is of
Sufficient quality to reliably drive a Digital TV box most people will get a greatly
Improved picture.
Digital can be particularly effective at eliminating ghosting and snowy Pictures
And also those common annoying electrical interference lines on ABC analogue.
Digital does give us more channels in higher quality
And I suppose its Free Thats always a bonus!
(The UK are thinking about subscription Fee's. so there is no guarantee )
That said we have no choice, the switch off happening starting 2010
Whether we like it or not so give us a call and make sure you are
Digital ready now!
