Check the spacing of the studs in the wall before buying the mount. Most swivel mounts have fixing holes spaced to fit onto 450mm spaced studs, but they can vary between 400mm and 600mm.

Try to buy a mount that will hold around four times the weight of the TV. This may sound excessive but if a child grabs it or someone falls and reaches out to hold themselves up then this will put a huge strain on the mount. It will be at that time that you will be pleased you spent that little bit more.

One of the dangers when drilling into a wall is hitting live wires with the drill bit. Some stud finders can detect live AC wiring so buying one of these will make the job safer.

Wire up a proper power outlet for your TV. Running an extension cord inside the wall does not meet building regulations and causes a significant fire risk.

Data cables running into the wall must be to code to pass inspection when it comes to selling your house. The store that sells you the cable should be able to advise you on which cable is suitable. Spending a little more here will save you having to pull them all out and replace them after an inspection.

If you are mounting above a fireplace, ensure it is vented adequately and not trapping heat to prevent the majority of the heat flowing directly to the TV.

Final Note

Good Luck with Your Install and the most important thing to remember when installing the bracket is test test test! No loose bolts, no wobbles etc.. There have been reported cases of TV’s falling on childrens heads: it does happen! not in Australia as far as I know yet but just be careful, generally when I install TV bracket I test it with my own weight. If it will hold me when I pull up on it I know it will be
safe for a TV with a child swinging off it…
